“Greats of Croatian photography of the 50s”
This historical exhibition with the theme of the Croatian Mediterranean is best described in a few sentences by our famous photographer, writer and chronicler Abdulah Seferović in the preface of the catalog “Visit of the Old Lady”: “Photographs of the Croatian Adriatic from the 1950s still preserve the unattainable charm of the old lady! Simply because these are pictures of nostalgic beauty, pictures of the search for Mediterranean identity and lost time (which turned into a myth), pictures that open the way to an imaginative life 60 years ago creative dialogue with what is no longer there, yet still exists. The stylists of their black and white elegance followed, on the one hand, the spirit of the global trend of the legendary world exhibition “The Family of Man” (1955), and on the other hand, the no less legendary agency Magnum, together with the spirit of the weekly Paris Match and Life. Today, however, all this fits perfectly with the skepticism towards “reality” and “authenticity”, and even more with the postmodernist sensibility’s disinterest in formal The exhibition from the series “Friends of the Sea” in 40 formats 50×70 cm presents artistic photography created in the 50s of the last century with the theme of life in the Croatian Adriatic. The works were selected by the expert team of the “Rovinj Photodays” festival and were collected from the funds of national museums, photo clubs and private collections: MUO Zagreb, Zadar National Museum, Tošo Dabac Archive, Rijeka City Museum, Photo Club Split, Photo Club Rijeka, Orel Private Collection , private collection of Vučemilović. The aim of this exhibition is to show domestic and foreign visitors the enviable culture of Croatian photography in the 50s.
